TEMPLE BETH EL

presents

Civil War in 1865, Benjamin exiled
himself to Europe. Conspiracy theo-
rists, always eager to find Jews to
blame, say he may have been the
leader of the conspiracy that led to
Lincoln's assassination.
Grant, not surprisingly, had a
rocky relationship with the Jews. In
1868, there was a vigorous debate with-
in the growing Jewish community about
whether Jews could, in good conscience,
support the promulgator of General
Order 11. Grant did what politicians
today do; he denied knowing about the
order issued in his name and apologized
without saying he was sorry.
Grant, at least, was a quick learner;
after his presidential election, he went
out of his way to appoint a number of
Jews to important posts. Reportedly
he offered the position of secretary of
the treasury to Joseph Seligman, an
immigrant peddler-turned-financial
giant. Seligman, remembered for an
incident in 1877 when he was turned
away from the Grand Union Hotel in
Saratoga Springs, declined Grant's
offer, preferring to make money in
New York instead.
President Grant did succeed in
convincing Herman Bendel, a Jew, to
become commissioner of Indian
affairs. That appointment, according
to Sarna, didn't go over well with
Christian Washington, since the corn-
missioner was supposed to oversee the
pacification — and the evangelization
— of the Native Americans. Bendel
didn't last long, but his appointment
was one more advance for Jews in the
executive branch.
President Grover Cleveland, who
served from 1885-1889, had a trusted
friend in Isidor Straus, the founder of
Mary's Department Store and a mem-
ber of a family that served presidents
well into the 20th century. Straus is
better known today — thanks to
Holly-wood — for his dramatic death
aboard the Titanic in 1912.
Straus, who was born in Bavaria and
immigrated to Georgia, supported the
Confederate cause during the Civil War.
His family later moved to New York
and went into the dry goods business.
Straus took an interest in public
affairs; he was elected to Congress in
1893. During the Cleveland adminis-
tration, he had ready access to the
White House.
