The thought of having
Adam Sandler as a father
would scare any adult. But
ask a little boy if he would
enjoy having the star of
The Waterboy as the "man
in charge," and almost any
tyke would respond with
an enthusiastic "yes."
In Big Daddy, directed by
Main Man: Sandler is out to get the girl in 'Big
Dennis Dugan, Sandler

plays Sonny Koufax, a 32-
year-old law school graduate
who, instead of taking the bar exam, works at a tollbooth once a week, living
off the money he won in a court case when a taxicab ran over his foot. His
lifestyle consists of a steady round of beer, watching TV, sleeping until 1 in
the afternoon and takeout.
To impress his girlfriend and prove he's not as irresponsible as he seems,
he temporarily "adopts" a child by pretending to Social Services that he's
the biological father of a 5-year-old boy whose mother can't take care of
him. (The real father, Koufax's friend and roommate— played by Jon

Stewart — is temporarily out of the country)
In response to his own rocky relationship with his hypercritical father,
Lenny Koufax, a big-shot lawyer played by Joe Bologna, Sonny decides to
take on the responsibilities of raising a child in New York City with an
anything-goes approach. The film's poster, showing Sonny and Julian
(played by 5-year-old twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse) urinating on the side
of a New York City building, says it all.
The adoption ruse doesn't work on Sonny's girlfriend, who dumps him,
and a round of bedwetting, sleep deprivation and listening to annoying
children's videos initially cools Sonny on parenting. He tries to return
Julian to Social Services, only to discover that Julian's mother has died. To
his surprise, Sonny realizes he has grown to love Julian — and decides to
keep him until a suitable family is found.
When Social Services discovers Sonny isn't the real father and wants to
take Julian away, he turns to a new love interest, hard-working attorney
Layla (Joey Lauren Adams), and his own father fo±. help.
As in any Sandler movie, including this one, the audience can expect big
laughs from the characters' disgusting remarks and crude behavior. But in
this film, viewers also get to see the sensitive and caring side of Sandler, a side
that he's rarely portrayed on the big screen or in any of his previous projects.
It comes out in his relationship with Julian, as well as the way he comes
to terms with his overbearing father, whose good intentions Sonny eventu-
ally realizes through his own parenting experience.
Big Daddy is a very entertaining flick. It's as simple as that.
Sandler and his team have finally created a film that is not only geared
toward teenage boys but has elements that will draw in a much wider audience.
