The class knew the tractate so well
that, in addition to quoiiiig it and corn-
menting on its meaning, they were able -
to answer questions about which words
were in specific places on named pages.
The program was held in conjunc-
tion with the yahrtzeit of Lubavitcher
Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson
and was highlighted with an address by
Shalom Ber Levitin, chief Lubavitch
emissary for the Pacific Northwest. I I

n addition to full school days,
including the study of Chasidic
philosophy, Rambam (Rabbi
Moshe ben Maimom, also known
as Maimonides) and the Shulchan
Aruch (Code of Jewish Law,) the 10th
grade at Cheder Lubavitch in Oak Park
embarked on a venture that took an
entire school year to complete.
Each of the 11 students in a class
spent 10 months memorizing an
entire Talmud tractate.

The new knowledge was cele-
brated at a siyum, described by
Rabbi Finman as the end of a

The program was attended by 200
relatives, school faculty and members of
the community.
Rabbi Finman said a panel from out-
side the school grilled the boys on the
contents of the 120-page Gittin, a trac-
tate concerning divorce.
Included on the panel were Rabbi
Elimeilech Silberberg from the Sara
Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center,
Rabbi Yichezkel Grubner, Rabbi Shaiall
