n amendment to a juvenile
crime bill that passed last
week in the U.S. House of
Representatives has stirred
up a debate over the Ten
Commandments and the separation of
church and state.
The juvenile justice bill, which pro-
poses tougher juvenile crime standards
and anti-violence measures passed
287-139, with 206 Republicans and
81 Democrats voting for the bill, and
127 Democrats, 11 Republicans and
one Independent voting against it.
An amendment, introduced by
Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), which
would allow states to display the Ten
Commandments in schools and other c--/
public places, passed by a similar vote.
The bill now moves to a House-
Senate conference committee.
Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.),
who voted for both measures, said the
values of the Ten Commandments
, "transcend tel
differences" and
do not violate the First Amendment.
"It simply provides the states with ,__,
„_
the flexibility to decide whether or not `
they want to display the Ten
Commandments in public places," he
said. "In light of the epidemic of vio-
lent juvenile crime that is sweeping
across our nation, I believe it's time we
condemn the obscene and violent mes-
sages that are bombarding our children
each day and take steps to inject some ,
:–.,__\
decency into the public square."
Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.), who
opposed the amendment, simply said,
The answer to school violence, which
is critical to pursue, is not to do vio-
lence to the Constitution." P1
