The Jewish Historical Society celebrates 40 years
of documenting the past.

CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ_ -
Local Columnist

ir

he Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan
recently celebrated its 40th
.
anniversary at the
annual meeting. More than 160 peo-
ple attended at Temple Beth El.
.
Honored at the gathering was
Michael W. Maddin, who received the
1999 Leonard N. Simons History
Award for his extensive community ser-
vice and philanthropy. As chairman of
the centennial anniversary of the
United Jewish Foundation/Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
Maddin helped arrange many of the
events. They included a visual history
of pictures and artifacts chronicling the
first 100 years of the organized Jewish
community, held last March at the D.
Dan & Betty Kahn. Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
"During the time I was chairman of
the centennial of
the organized
Jewish community,
one am), priori-
ties was the histori-
c-121 display at the
JCC," noted
Maddin. "There
was a direct con-
nection of collect-
ing archival, his-

torical information and bringing our
community together," he added.
Maddin recalled that the late
Leonard Simons frequently called
him to ask for his views on various
issues in the community.
"He then immediately told me his
opinion, and we didn't always agree,
but it was a special relationship,"
Maddin said.
The JHS event also featured Dr.
Sidney Fine, the Andrew Dickson
White Distinguished Professor of
History at the University of
Michigan. Fine spoke on the United
