The family was told Detroit vas a dreary, dangerousplace to live with terrible weather. But Shani says, "I can't begin to tell you how surprised I am by the beauty of the area, the savvy people, the warm, welcoming community. Even the weather hasn't been bad. We drove around through ,, the January snow storms. The Shanis love the horse farm area in which they live, but in contrast to the rural style of Rochester Hills, Shani finds the sophistication of her customers in the nearby.Somerset Collection an unexpected pleasure. "These \vomen really understand the fashion scene. They get it," says Shani. The Neiman Marcus staff has taken to the new boss. Shani's "arrival brought a complete professional," says Marilyn Connor, public relations manager. "She combines strategic planning with a warm, never-ending personality. It's a package that's excit- ing for all of us." Shani loves fashion and tends to a classic, understated style. She's not married to any one designer, but the names Jil Sander and Armani (the black label) crop up in her conversa- tion. She says she's not worried about multi-millionaire computer execs run- ning around Silicon Valley dressed in jeans and T-shirts, or audiences turn- ing up at theaters and concert halls in sport clothes. "We live in dynamic times," says Shani. "We're on the cusp of an upheaval, an amazing Internet world we couldn't have foreseen 10 years ago. It's changing the way we do everything!" In this new cyberspace world, Shani's one assumption is that fashion will be very relaxed. The family travels frequently to Cape Town, where her parents returned to live, and to Israel, which remains like a second home to Shani. With its unique boutiques, "the fash- ion scene is particularly interesting there," she says, noting that Israel's fashion industry has had an interna- tional impact on bathing suits and leathers. Looking forward to a less-busy pace once she settles into her job (she typically keeps a 10-hour, six-day-a- week work schedule), Shani says she intends to become active in the Jewish community. She's already met Penny Blumenstein, president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "I look forward to my involvement."
