ord Immanuel Jakobovits sees no conflict between
Judaism's ancient belief system and the modern world's
computer and communication revolution.
Proving his point June 10, Jakobovits, the former
chief rabbi of Great Britain, spoke from England to Jewish
audiences in Detroit and Toronto via the inaugural Ohr
Somayach "Jerusalem Vision" teleconference.
Emerging technology, he told questioners, comes from
"human ingenuity combined with Divine inspiration."
"We can use modern means of technology for instruction,
to improve life," he insisted during the live, 60-minute session.
"We can make instruction much more exciting than ever in
the past. It can help to
create a better society"
Norman Fill, one
of 130 Detroiters par-
ticipating at the Max
M. Fisher Jewish
Federation Building,
asked the rabbi about
the spiritual ramifica-
tions of an open
mind. The mind can
be so open that the
brain falls out," Rabbi
Jakobovits said.
"There is nothing
wrong with an open
mind, but we can still
have spiritual values.
We have to come to
terms with the realistic
world, but I see no
conflict in this."
Not all of the hour
Rabbi Jakobovits came through
was geek-speak.
on the big screen.
In response to
Detroiter David Jaffa, the rabbi said, "It is terrible that in
Israel the majority of children do not receive a Jewish edu-
cation. Golda ivieir said, 'Teach your children to at least
know what they reject.' I say teach them what they should
accept.
"That way they can make an informed choice, not a
choice out of ignorance."
