Arthur taught me how to drink rum
the Jamaican way. I taught Arthur
about Judaism.
It turned out that his grandfather
was a white sailor from New York who
happened to be Jewish. So we did have
something very important in common.
Arthur taught me that no matter how
long you lived, whether it's one year or
99, life is over in a blink of an eye so
enjoy it while it's here. Respect every-
thing and especially everyone.
As I read the Jewish News and other
media, I can't help but see that our
own people can't, won't and don't get
along with other Jews simply because
of different backgrounds. I'm not
talking about Jew and Christian,
white and black, Jew and Arab, Jew
and Chaldean. I'm talking about
God's children and God's children.
What is wrong with us?
Life is over in the blink of an eye.
We are born, we will die, guaranteed.
Go out of your safe homes. Truly
enjoy the time that is allotted to you.
You do not have to give up your belief
system or your lifestyle to be friends.
For what Arthur taught me, I will <
always be grateful.

Captured Pride

With the conclusion of the 100-year
celebration of the organized Jewish
community of Detroit, I wish to
express the gratitude of the Jewish
Federation and the United Jewish
Foundation for the Jewish News' supe-
rior coverage of this milestone event.
Throughout the past year, the Jew-
ish News editorial staff not only has
covered events from end to end, but
has made its readership aware of the
remarkable community we are
through thoughtful commentary; in-
depth articles and photographic
essays.
The thorough coverage of the clos-
ing event — including the Israel Fest
and Kosher Food Fair — was a won-
derful conclusion to the community's
birthday. Our hundreds of volunteers
and thousands of participants are
most grateful for the full participa-
tion.
