A Friend
Named Arthur
Arthur died yesterday. Arthur was my
friend. I guess that at 58, I am of the
age when I start to experience the loss
of my contemporaries.
With credit to my cantor ; I like to
think of myself as a blending Jew, one
not restricted by any tradition. My
friendships are ones of mutual respect
for each other's religious beliefs.
Arthur was a black man who was
born in Jamaica. He was barely able to
eke out a living as a tailor here in
Michigan. Arthur told me he was
never paid more than $5 an hour. I've
seen his work. He was not a hack with
the needle and thread.
Arthur was 85 when he died, surely
not my contemporary. How I came to
be a friend with Arthur is not impor-
tant. What is important is that two
men from opposite lifestyles fed off
each other. Arthur told me that he
loved me and treasured the time we
spent together. I told Arthur that I
loved him and was appreciative of
what he was able to teach me.
Arthur enjoyed coming to our
home and seeing our garden. It
reminded him of Jamaica. He so
much enjoyed the birth of our grand-
chadren. He especially enjoyed corn-
ing to work with me and helping out.
Arthur taught me what it was like
growing up impoverished with a lim-
ited education, from a broken home,
never seeing snow or weather that
