her oldest child Jeremie enrolled. She
also saw her daughter Alissia back and
forth until five years ago and now has
daughter Adina with three years left at
the Farmington Hills school.
Much has changed in America since
this car pool first rumbled down a dri-
veway. Ronald Reagan came and went
and his dearest adversary, the Soviet
Union, crumbled. Hip-hop and
Beanie Babies replaced rap and
Cabbage Patch dolls. The cell phone,
the computer and the Internet fill
niches that didn't exist in 1984.
Much has changed too for the
Huntington Woods and Oak Park
parents who endured the daily 10-mile
journey to Hillel. The station wagon
gave way to the sport utility vehicle, I-
696 cut the drive time almost in half
while tuition doubled. And the kids,

growing up, began to enjoy getting to
school early.
"When we started, I immediately
got rid of my Olds Cutlass," Einhorn
said. "I went from that to an Aerostar,
to a Windstar, to a Mountaineer to a
Navigator. I have no clue what it's like
to drive a regular car."
We couldn't have done it without
the mini-van," added Lewis. "I don't
even remember the car we used to
have, but we all have mini-vans. The
only time someone drives a regular car
is when a kid's out sick."
Among the long-timers, husbands Joe
Lewis, Sol Einhorn and Bob Kass have
been known to drive from time to time.
Barry Chesterman, father to the
youngest pair in the carpool —
Benjamin, 10 and Nathan, 8 — drives
the shifts for his family. Angelina and
