Synagogue dedicates a Torah in the name
of a beloved member.

he parade moving toward
Southfield Road on May 23
was no ordinary march. An
exuberant group danced and
sang their way to Congregation
Shomrey Emunah, taking with them
their newly completed Torah.
A crowd of nearly 500 brought the
Torah from a private residence, where it
was completed, to its new home at the
synagogue.
The Torah was donated by members
of the congregation in memory of
Marvin Berlin, a founder of the
Southfield synagogue who passed away
in March.
In two separate ceremonies, sofer
(scribe) Rabbi Levi Kagan of Oak Park
filled in letters outlined before the Torah
was brought to Detroit from Israel. A
gathering took place in the morning for
members to dedicate letters of the
Torah, followed by its completion at a
private family meeting in the Berlin
home.

included women in
casual long skirts, men
in sport shirts, yeshiva
students and childre:-,
in crowns. They sur-
rounded Berlin's sons,
William and Max,
who took turns carry-
ing the new Torah
down police-barricaded streets. Some
pushed strollers and a few young boys
straggled behind on bicycles, wearing
helmets while carrying their everyday
black hats.

with music during the mourning period
for their father, returned to their homes

when the Torah reached the synagogue.
Most of the crowd packed into the
building to celebrate the Torah with a
live band and refreshments.
Zachariash reflected on the day, call-
ing it "an all-around elevating experi-
ence." But he added that although "the
honor was appropriate, the day was bit-
tersweet, because it was held in mem-
ory of Marvin." 7_
