Marcia Mittelman, Elan's execu-
tive director, said the event, held as
part of Older Americans Month,
was arranged in response to "the
several relationships among the resi-
dents — a few couples who found
each other at Elan Village."
As nightfall arrived and the
music stopped, many in the group
headed home. A few lingered to
watch band members pack up their
instruments and staff clear away
refreshments and replace tables that
were moved to make a dance floor.
Eventually, their attention turned
to 82-year-old Pearl Z. Schiffman,
who promised she had a trick to
share.
After explaining that she'd always
been agile, Schiffman showed just
how limber she was. Folding her
body in half, with locked knees she
bent over until her open palms
touched the floor. She stood up and
announced that she used to be able
to put her leg around the back of
her neck, a sight that always caused
her mother to leave the room.
But the show wasn't over. Amid
the gasps of those who didn't realize
that her next feat was deliberate,
Schiffman, who said she'd always
wanted to be a dancer, placed her
right foot forward and her left foot
back. Sliding to the floor in one
perfect split, she showed that,
through practice and a love of
movement, it turns out that a
dancer is what she actually is. [11
