This year, the Federation, affiliated
with nearly 20 local agencies, serves
approximately 100,000 Jews living in
the Detroit area. Its recently completed
Allied Jewish Campaign raised close to
$30 million, about half of which goes
to national agencies to send to Israel.
Aronson said the critical issue for
the Federation in the future is "rele-
vance to the lives of the Jewish people."
Referring to the three roles of
Federation — helping those in need,
Jewish education, and developing and
encouraging a sense of worldwide
Jewish responsibility — he said Israel
would share more of a partnership
role with American Jews.
"The period of one-way giving is
almost over," he said. "There will be
charitable activities in Israel that for
all I know will be finding programs
in America."

"Gratitude is the
word a thousand
times over.

— Rabbi Steven Weil

Sidney Bolkosky, professor and
author of Harmony and Dissonance
Voices of Jewish Identity in Detroit,
1914 1967, said the major issue fac-
ing the Jewish community in the next
century is one of religious pluralism.
"The prospect for peace in the
Middle East is probably better than
the prospect of peace for Jews in the
United States," he said. "The question
of Jewish identity, while it's getting
more and more intense, is, in my view,
nothing new, it's been going on for the
last 2,500 years. There is considerable
reason for hope, but I see virtually no
end to that kind of divisiveness."
Strolling on the Walk for Israel
through the predominately Orthodox
neighborhood with family in tow was
Rabbi Steven Weil of Young Israel of
Oak Park. He pointed out home addi-
tions and credited the Neighborhood
Project for enabling the Orthodox
population to double in less than a
decade. He used one word to sum up
his feelings for the Federation:
"Gratitude."
"Gratitude is the word a thousand
times over, for what we got from the
Federation. We're extremely happy
and ecstatic that the march is going
through our neighborhood." I I
