Allan, President Daily 'Til 5:30 Sat. 'Til 3 has safely fled to Albania. Recently, U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and U.S. Rep. Sander Levin visited the JFS to listen to refugees, including the Fazlius, and the resettlement work- ers assigned to take care of them. "Europe and the civilized world has responded to your plight in the only way it knows how,_ which is to open our arms to you and to also try to stop ethnic cleansing and to reverse history by restoring those refugees. who want to go home," said Sen. Levin. "Time Mill tell, but clearly we have to persevere until the Serbians leave and all of you and your compatriots V ho want to return are able to return in complete safety," added Rep. Levin. Even if the war ended now, "return won't be easy," said Fazliu. "There's no material wealth back there at all. The only way I would go back is with the guarantee of NATO. Without an army formed of NATO troops to guarantee safety, the same thing would happen again." The help of strangers has been incredible, he said, and the different religious organizations that take care of his family are a non-issue. "We never had problems there (Kosovo) religiously," he said. "There's no reason to have problems here." Rachel Yoskowitz, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services at the JFS, agreed from the other side. "We're rescuing endangered souls," she said. "If you go back to the Torah, it says you should help the widow and the orphan and the stranger in your . midst. It doesn't say you should only help your co-religionists." Since arriving, the Fazliu family has stayed in the homes of families from the Albanian Islamic Center. The JFS has found an apartment for the family, paid with assistance from a govern- ment refugee program. Fazliu was referred to a refugee assistance pro- gram at the Lutheran Social Services to find an entry-level job. "It's been a very good way for all the communities to contribute," said Yoskowitz. Recently, 28 women from the National Council of Jewish Women's Greater Detroit Section packed more than 400 bags of donated toiletries for the refugees. "The organization is a social action organization and advocate on political issues that can be controversial like pro-choice, but this is non-controver- sial," said Sandra Leshman of West Bloomfield, a volunteer. Its very clear to all of us that these people have needs, and it's reminiscent of what my father-in-law and mother-in-law went through in Europe during the war." Fazliu said his family is very grate- ful for the help it has received. "I believe that if the situation was reversed, and people had to come to Kosovo, I think that we're a humane < society and we would have helped them just as well. We would open up our houses, too."
