Project Helps
Urban Youth

As their community service segment
for the New Leaders Project, seven
participants organized an overnight
at Tamarack Camps last weekend for
a group of children from southwest
Detroit's Harms Elementary School.
In its third-year, NLP is designed
to introduce young Jewish leaders,
ages 25-40, to people and issues
shaping metro Detroit and the
Jewish community. There is a focus
on social justice and charitable
work.
The Expanding Horizons camp
project is the culmination of the
yearlong New Leaders Project spon-
sored by the Jewish Community
Council and Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"I had a connection with Harms
Elementary School through some
other work that I've done and felt
the children at this school would
really benefit from this experience,"
said Barbara Blum, a NLP camp
project participant. "Everyone
involved with the project is excited
about it, especially the children."
"It was a lot of work putting the
program together, but it will be a
very beneficial experience for every-
one," said Janet Ray, director of
Harms' Communities in Schools
program.
Communities in Schools believes
every child should have a one-on-
one relationship with a caring adult,
a safe place to lean and grow, a mar-
ketable skill to use upon graduation,
and a chance to give back to peers
and community. It tries to strength-
en the relationship of families.
At camp, 40 first- through fifth-
graders took part in recreational
activities, including swimming,
boating and arts and crafts, as well
as activities promoting self-confi-
dence and critical thinking.
