The Kosher Way

ith all the Y2K doom-
and-gloom, it was just a
question of time before
someone came up with
a Jewish angle.
Enter Micah Miles, a Baltimore
computer guy with a big deal: Y2K
supplies that are certified kosher.
But worried folks everywhere can
check out his inventory and place
orders.
The site opens with a Jerusalem
rabbi answering this question:
"What is the Jewish response to
Y2K?"
His answer is reassuring, sort of:
Jews will always be around, he says,
come pestilence, natural disaster,
oppression — or computer melt-
downs. Still, being prepared is never a
bad idea.
Unlike many survival food compa-
nies catering to Evangelical Y2K buffs,
the Kosher Y2K site apparently isn't
trying to make a buck by scaring the
pants off people.
From the homepage, click your way
to the menu of food with at least a
five-year shelf life — sort of like the
"Meals Ready to Eat" that U.S. sol-
diers get, only kosher.
Want pasta with garden vegetables?
No sweat. Want Chicken
Mediterranean with no MSG? Click,
go to the checkout and fill out the

credit card information.
There's also a discussion forum,
with folks going back and forth about
the risks posed by the "millennium
bug" and about the Christian funda-
mentalists who have worked it into
their apocalyptic theology.
To make sure you get the point,
there's a countdown clock showing the
time left until the fateful day.
There are also a handful of Y2K
links — mainstream media links,
mostly, nothing really kooky here —
and links providing basic information
about kashrut.
The design is very simple and
clean, but the blaring martial music
playing in the background is irritating.
