What might happen, acknowledges
the director, is that "people go in
droves to see this movie [expecting
another Silence of the Lambs] and end
up liking [Instinct] for what it is," a
film that asks a lot of questions about
mankind and the world we live in
today."
Loosely based on the novel Ishmael,
by Daniel Quinn, the story follows
anthropologist and primatologist
Powell (Hopkins), who travels to
Rwanda and becomes so engrossed in
the mountain gorillas he is studying
that he chooses to live among them.
When park rangers discover the miss-
ing doctor, he snaps, murders two
rangers and ends up in a prison for
the criminally insane.
Cuba Gooding Jr. plays a psychi-
atric resident whose mentor (Donald
Sutherland) asks him to evaluate
Powell, who hasn't spoken for years.
The young psychiatrist sets out to
treat him — and solidify his own
career. But their roles get reversed.
"I think the film is interesting and
provocative in a way that I hope will
inspire audiences to think what our
priorities are to ourselves and others,"
says Turteltaub.
The director, whose credits include
1993's Cool Runnings, 1995's While
You Were Sleeping and 1996's
Phenomenon, eagerly jumped into the
project after the film's original director
didn't work out, and spent four
months shooting in Jamaica, the West
Indies, Orlando and Los Angeles.
"This was the smoothest, easiest
shoot I've ever been on," he main-
tains, "even [with] what could have
been considered a huge bump in the
road. During one of the scenes,
Anthony Hopkins snapped his
Achilles tendon, yet he refused to get
it fixed. He just wanted to keep film-

ing. We forced him to have surgery.
We stopped shooting for about three
months and then picked up again."
Such is the life of a guy who grew
up in the Hollywood limelight. Born
in New York, Turteltaub was raised in
an observant Jewish home in Beverly
Hills, Calif. His father, Saul, is a well-
known television producer whose
credits include Sanford es. Son, What's
Happening, That Girl and Love —
American Style.
Even as a young boy, Turteltaub
showed signs of a future career in
show business. "If you're kind of a
showoff and crazy and like entertain-
ing people and making them laugh, in
some families people might say, 'That
kid's an idiot.' In my house, they said,
`Oh, the kid's got talent.'"
In addition to encouraging their
two sons to be creative, Turteltaub's
parents also emphasized the impor-
tance of living a Jewish life. The fami-
ly kept kosher (something Turteltaub
still does to some degree) and
observed Shabbat and other holidays.
"I feel very closely connected to
being Jewish," admits Turteltaub, 35.
"If someone were to say, 'Who are
you?' I would include the word Jewish
right up there. It has profoundly
affected my life. It is something that I
cherish."
Though he has never worked on an
inherently Jewish film, Turteltaub says
he respects the film industry's interest
in exploring issues pertaining to the
Jewish experience. He praises this
year's Oscar winner Life is Beautiful as
one of the best movies he has ever
seen.
"When I see a Holocaust film, I
think of 'me' as a victory over the
Nazis. Honoring that role is very
important to me," he says. "People ask
me why I keep kosher, because it
