Crystal Wish Webster, a 17 year-
old senior from Walled Lake
Western High
School, partici-
pated in the
Michigan
Youth Arts
Vocal Festival
for Michigan
at the Western
Michigan
University
campus,
Kalamazoo.
She was one of
14 students from 6,000 competi-
tive singers in the state to perform
solo voice compositions at the fes-
tival. She also was one of 16 stu-
dents to perform in forensics pre-
sentation at Western Michigan.

Lisa Gluck of West Bloomfield has
become Andover High School
class president for the second year
in a row.

Helen Ritter, 89-year-old resident
of the Teitel Jewish Apartments
and Services, was recognized by
the Michigan Association of
Homes and Services for the Aging
as the winner of the Individual
Volunteer of the Year Award. The
selection committee cited her
depth of commitment over 35
years to many projects, including
organizing the Teitel Talent Show
for 10 years and teaching language
skills to Russian immigrants and
refugees for seven years.

Mary Lou Zieve was one of three
local honorees at the Hall of Fame
luncheon of the International
Institute of Metropolitan Detroit.

Joel M. Starr recently received his
doctor of chiropractic degree from
Life University in Marietta, Ga.
Dr. Starr is the son of Dr. Robert
Starr and Esther Starr of
Southfield.

Adam Greenbaum of Southfield,
an eighth grade student at Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Lathrup

Village, was one of 10 winners in
the statewide America & Me Essay
Contest. He received an engraved
plaque, savings bonds valued at
$250 and a $250 check.

Patricia R. Rosen of Troy is the
new director of development for
the Detroit
Historical
Society. She
also serves as
an instructor
in the fashion
merchandising
department at
Marygrove
College in
Detroit.

and Norman Bash of West
Bloomfield and director of the
United Jewish Federation of
MetroWest's Young Leadership
Division and Community
Campaigns, has been awarded the
1999 Leo Brody Jewish
Communal Service Award. The
award includes a grant that covers
the cost of travel to Israel to par-
ticipate in a seminar or other edu-
cational experience to enhance the
candidate's effectiveness as a
Jewish communal professional.

Sharon A. Braslaw, formerly of
Farmington Hills, and doctoral
candidate at Harvard University
in history, has received the
McNeil Center Research Fellow
Award and the Artemas Ward
Fellowship.

Diane Levine received the
Outstanding Clinical Faculty
Award from the Wayne State
University School of Medicine.
This is the fifth year she has
received this honor.

Miriam Levine, a ninth grader at
Berkley High School, has been
awarded second prize in the
Oakland County High School
Writing Competition. She is one
of 360 entries from high schools
in the area.

Judge Stephen C. Cooper was
selected as a finalist for the 1999
Governor's Community Service
Award for his volunteer service in
issues of law and justice. Cooper is
active in programs relating to chil-
dren and educating the public
about our legal system. He was the
founder and has been the major
coordinator of the annual Law
Fair; he has been honored with the
Martin Luther King Jr. Award for
a citizen whose life exemplifies the
ideals espoused by Dr. King and
with the Distinguished Service
Award of the Oakland County Bar
Association for his efforts in edu-
cating the public about legal rights
and responsibilities.

Carl Levine received a score of
superior in the National
Federation Piano Competition.
This is the fourth year he has
competed and received such a
high score.

David Plunkett of Ann Arbor has
been named one of the aronfman
Youth Fellows for 1999. He will
spend five weeks in Israel in
intensive study this summer; all
expenses are covered by the pro-
gram, including international
transportation, room, board, trav-
el in Israel and incidentals.

Rechelle Winkler, an Akiva
Hebrew Day School alum, will
serve as a secretary-general for the
Yeshiva University Model United
Nations to be held next February.
Previously, she served as a four-
year team member and as a com-
mittee chairperson in 1999. She is
the daughter of Tziporah and Ira
Winkler.

Barbara Abel of West Bloomfield
has a color photograph, Perfection,
in the Viridian Artists Inc. juried
exhibition in New York.
