Healing Services

Shir Shalom

and the people who
Cancer
support them are invited to a creative
healing service, "Healing Service for
Mind, Body and Soul," to be held
7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at
Temple Shir Shalom. Rabbis Dannel
Schwartz, Michael Moskowitz and
cantorial soloist Penny Steyer will lead
the service.
The service will follow the struc-
ture of the traditional Reform litur-
gy with the addition of special
music, including selections by
Jewish folksinger Debbie Friedman,
guided meditations and additional
prayers of healing.
The service is sponsored by N'siah,
a Jewish spiritual support group
founded at Detroit's Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute. The
intent of N'siah (Hebrew for "a jour-
ney'') is to show how Judaism brings
comfort, support and hope to those
individuals and families living with
cancer, and give cancer patients and
survivors a chance to meet with indi-
viduals who share and can identify
with the same issues and concerns.
For information on the service, call
the temple office, (248) 737-8700.
For information on N'siah, call the
. Karmanos Institute, 1 (800) KAR-

Shaarey Zedek

Congregation Shaarey Zedek will
hold its first healing service 7:30
p.m. Thursday, June 3, at its B'nai
Israel Center.
The service is an alternative form
of prayer geared toward those seeking
strength and connection whether they
themselves are going through some of
life's challenges or simply wish to
stand in support of those who are.
Held in an informal setting with
participants seated in a circle, the
hour-long service is interactive and
led by lay persons and the clergy.
The healing service is often cathar-
tic and consists of readings, songs,
meditation, sharing and a sense of
community.
"Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav
said, It is forbidden to despair,'"
said Faye Ullmann, chairing the
synagogue's Life Cycles Committee,
which created the new service under
the guidance of Rabbi Stephen
Weiss and Rabbi Joseph Krakoff.
This form of prayer at Shaarey
Zedek is our response ro the needs
of those seeking healing for them-
selves or others."
The June 3 service is open to the
public by reservation. Call Gladys
Sampson, (248) 357-5544.
