My mom told me I was the best brother I could have been. \A/hen my friends came over and we played \-64, I let him come with us and did not make stay upstairs. I always included him. When all of my friends came over to make a shiva call, I tried not to cry and to be brave, but I could not. Some of them brought me candy and stuff, but I could not eat. It was hard to sleep for days. At the funeral I think there were 2,000 people. My teachers and friends and my hockey coach were all there. My hockey coach told me that my team was going to wear black arm bands in memory of Evan. I went to that game, but I did not play and at the end my coach dedicated the game puck to Evan. The whole team signed the puck. My cousin who is older than me made me a scrapbook to put mem- ories of Evan inside. I brought it to school and my friends wrote letters to Evan. I hope this cce.,--s not happen to another child because it is so harsh. I love my brother and miss him. Part II I admired my brother Evan because he was very smart. When my family would say some- thing he never heard before he would remember it, and later he would say it. He had a very good vocabul2_- , / For him, learning looked easy. He had a great memory. Evan had brown hair and blue eyes. He died at the age of 2-1/2. He was very funny and silly. If he would have grown up, he would have played hockey, football and other sports with me. He loved to go places, my hockey games for example. Has your child written a story, poem or essay you think would be great for The AppleTree If so, please send it our way. When my friends came over, I let him come downstairs with us. When he saw us playing Nintendo, he would pick up a controller and play with us also. Evan was special to me. He -'always said I was his hero, and he called me by the nickname "Buddy." I had a very special rela- tionship with him. Now I go to shul and say prayers for him. I know that kids complain that they hate their brothers and sisters, but if their brothers or sisters died they would be heartbroken. I believe that life is important and the little things are not. God, I miss him. I will always remember hirn. LJ Bradley Pierce, 1 1, of Waterford, wrote these essays in memory of his little brother, Evan Tyler Otis, who died April 12, 1998.
