Yissocher Weil and Yeshaya Hurvitz excitedly look at their new siddurim. I wo dozen pairs of small antsy feet in dress shoes showed through the crack at the bottom of the curtain on the audito- rium stage at the Agency for Jewish Edu- cation of Metropolitan Detroit. The curtain parted to reveal a lineup of boys and girls, dressed in their Shabbat best, for the annual Yeshivas Darchei Torah Siddur Party, held in April at the school's "Girls' Building" in Southfield. The kindergartners received their first sid- durim (Hebrew prayer books), each with a cloth bookcover decorat- ed by the child's mother. For these children, dav- ening (praying) is an exciting privilege they had earned. Wearing special "siddur crowns" and crepe paper stream- ers, the students sang songs welcoming friends and family, expressing gratitude to parents and teachers, and thanking the Almighty for their many blessings. — Susan Tawil
