Bicyclists enjoy the hostels in New
England

ding to over 30 countries. She says
her fondest memories do not come
necessarily from the hostels them-
selves although she has stayed in
interesting ones at the foot of a fjord
in Norway and another in the
Finnish countryside.
Instead, it was the people she met
along the way that made the differ-
ence. A social worker in Sweden invit-
ed her home for a week to learn more
about the socialized medical system in
that country; a travel official in
Switzerland met her in Norway and
invited her to stay with her for a week
in her country.
"I took them both up on their
offer and continued to correspond
with them for a while," she said, "and
I am glad I did."
Samson also advocated hostels,.say-
ing they fit the expectations of adoles-
cent and young adult travelers.
"At that age, you are looking for a
clean, cheap, safe place to crash and
take a shower," he said. "For $10 a
night, you know you aren't going to
get room service and four-star accom-
modations but you still get a pretty
nice place to stay."
