First, JVS helped him move to Central Methodist Church. Johnson worked for his room and board by performing different. tasks, such as installing dry wall. He also received help from the Wayne State University Veterans Affairs department. "I was lucky," Johnson said. "JVS taught me to be productive, to not use my disability as a crutch." Dmitriy Dombrovskiy Most Russian emigres who settle in the metropolitan Detroit area know about the Refugee Employment Services offered through JVS. And if they don't, Dmitriy Dombrovskiy is the perfect person to tell them. When he and his wife, Yelena, left Russia in February Dmitriy Dombrovskiy 1995, they 'of Haz:vtal Whiting came to Inc. Detroit because they. had relatives living here. He didn't waste any time getting to JVS's Refugee Employment Services, which provides refugees with voca- tional, cultural and linguistic assis- tance in order to help them find suc- cessful employment. After only a month in the program, Dombrovskiy had a job. He contin- ued to improve his skills by studying AutoCAD at Oakland Community College. This led to a better job as an automotive layout designer with Hawtal Whiting Inc., which is associ- ated with General Motors' bus and truck division in Pontiac. His supervisors awarded him a double class upgrade in just a little more than a year. "This is by no means the standard procedure. Normally, you must work above your classification for at least one year before you're considered for the next level," said Dorothy Russo, account manager at Hawtal Whiting. She said Dombrovskiy was "one of the first candidates from JVS who took advantage of the opportunity to make a transition to the design field in the U.S. automotive area, utilizing his excellent background of a degree in mechanical engineering." Dombrovskiy achieved recognition at work while trying to improve his English skills, becoming settled in a new country and managing to bring his mother, brother and grandmother here from Russia. He also became a __y father. "It was a hard decision to make to leave Russia," said the 32-year-old Dombrovskiy. "I had worked a few years as an engineer but in the end there was no work because of the eco- nomic situation there." He's happy about the Employee of the Year award, but said JVS is the one that deserves an award. "They helped not only me but a lot of people. So many people get jobs from them. Immigrants don't get this kind of help from state and federal employment agencies. I know, because I went through those, too, and I have something to corn- pare JVS to." fl Memos Nanci J.
