Take A Deep Breath

Ililir e have an older friend,
an architect, who
laments every year that
there will never be
enough springs
for all the lilacs
he wants to smell.
Reeling last week
in a perfumed
purple bower, we
had to agree
We found our-
selves thinking
about the Garden
of Eden and how
JONATHAN
glad we were that

spared the floral
kingdom. Lilacs
had to have been
a treasure of the Garden, right up
there with the olives and, presumably,
out-ranking the mischievous apples.
Not that lilacs can't be devilish. In a
single delicious moment they can pack
up touch and taste, sound and sight .
and hurl them into the backseat of the
roadster while smell alone guides us
down the byways of adventurous
memory. They can make us feel that
the hand in our hand is the hand we
want to hold forever. Lilacs are the
end of the opera's first act, when the
soprano and tenor make us think that
eternal love is not just possible but
probable.
Lilacs remind us that according to
Halacha (Jewish law), we are enjoined
to take pleasure in
life. Lilacs do
not consider
their own mor-
tality. But they
are a consola-
tion when we do,
an annual rhapsody
that could last us to

The following list was sent by

"Even in death, Hitler is still killing."
—Nobel laureate and Holocaust sur-
vivor Elie Wiesel, on an obsession with
Nazism exhibited by the Columbine
High killers in Littleton, Colo.

"But the world thinks we're Italian."
—The late Groucho Marx, according
to his son, author Arthur Marx. In a
recent lecture, the younger Marx recalled
his father's outrage about his plans to
mention that the Marx brothers were
Jewish in his book "Life with Groucho.”
