Youth

West
Bloomfield.
He said it
was a miracle
that day
schools such
as Hillel are
so successful
nearly 60
years after the
start of the
Rabbi Ed Feinstein
Holocaust.
"How do
you still believe in Jewish learning
after the Shoah, after such a careful-
ly, systematically arranged, planned
genocide?" he asked in admiration.
We must not give Hitler a
posthumous victory — and we
haven't, said the lecturer in the
Ziegler Rabbinical School at the
University of Judaism in Los Angeles
and the rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom
in Encino.
The last 60 years have seen an
unprecedented spurt in new con-
struction in the Jewish community,
nationally and in Israel. From syna-
gogues and community centers to
camps and day schools, "there has
been unbelievable generosity and
unbelievable vision," he said.
He added: "Fifty-five years after
Hitler, to be willing to stand up and
give your children Yiddishkeit
that's a miracle."
Citing the ability to study at
Hebrew University and shop along
Ben Yehudah Street in Jerusalem,
Feinstein asked, "Do you know what
a miracle that is — that Jews have
returned to Israel, that Jews live in
our own land?"
Expanding on that theme, he list-
ed these emotionally charged issues
facing Israel today: religious plural-
ism, Israeli-Palestinian relations,
national security, political leader-
ship.
He said these issues have helped
shape Israel's character — and are
vet more examples of "the miracle of
the State of Israel."
Marveling at our freedom and
opportunity here in America, greater
than at any stage in our faith's
4,000-year-old history, Feinstein said
his dream is of "a Judaism so mean-
ingful, so uplifting, so powerful, that
our kids will choose nothing else.
And they'll do so not because of
guilt, but because of love of Torah,
Jewish life, Hebrew, our ancestor's
tradition, and the wisdom of that
tradition." ri
