Kosovar Refugees
Get Local Aid

In response to efforts by the U.S. gov-
ernment to provide a safe haven for
20,000 ethnic Albanians forced out of
their homes in Kosovo, Southfield-based
Jewish Family Service is participating in
a resettlement program with other local
ethnic and religious groups.
Jewish agencies cooperating with JFS
include the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish
Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, National Council of Jewish
Women and Jewish Vocational Service.
JFS resettlement caseworkers are
being trained to deal with cultural issues
for Albanian refugees. JFS has hosted
sensitivity workshops for dealing with
post-traumatic stress for all agency staffs
dealing with resertlement.
To volunteer time or make donations
on behalf of the Albanian refugees
the Federation resource line, (248) 559-
4411, or the Interfaith Comm-unity
Disaster Kosovo Relief Hotline, staffed
locally by congregation sisterhoods,
(248) 559-6913, beginning May 24.
Jewish Family Service will not
accept donated clothing or furniture.
Needed items include new personal
care items, towels, shower curtains,
beverage glasses, diapers, toys, stuffed
animals, cleaning supplies, dishes/flat-
ware, bedding and linens.
JFS is asking for gift certificates in
$25 increments to Target, Kmart, JC
Penney and Meijer stores, which will
be given to refugee families for cloth-
ing purchases.

A clearly marked and staffed commu-
niry drop-off sire will be located at the
D. Dan & Betty Kahn Building of the
Jewish Community Center at Maple
and Drake in West Bloomfield begin-
ning May 24. Penske Corp. will provide
trucks to transport the donated items to
a Ford Motor Co. warehouse in
Highland Park.
Donations may be tax deductible.

Community Agency disaster relief effort
include Archdiocese of Detroit,
American Red Cross, Art Van Furniture,
Ford Motor Co., Jewish Family Service,
Lutheran Social Services, Penske Corp.,
Salvation Army, Society of Sr. Vincent de
Paul, United Methodist Church and
Wayne County Episcopal Diocese of
Michigan.
