in Detroit in March. On Rosenthal's
suggestion, they chose the themes of
conflict resolution and mutual respect
to be the most relevant and pressing to
the two communities.
Rosenthal said that violence in
schools was an important topic for
her students, particularly after the
recent school shooting in Littleton,
Colo. In Israel, a country not known
for delicate manners, teaching mutu-
al respect is a top priority. So the
three decided to make the two
themes work together.
"This connection with Detroit
gives our students an idea of what's
going

Weinish said after Rosenthal's visit.
"Most of them will not have the
opportunity to travel — certainly not
to Detroit. This program is a way to
expand their minds and their
English."

Bachar is familiar with Partnership
2000 from last year, when her stu-
dents contributed artwork for a joint
Michigan-Israel calendar celebrating
Israel's 50th birthday. Bachar said she
is concerned about the language barri-
er that divides the two communities.
"Unfortunately, American students,
even Jewish ones, rarely learn Hebrew,
and Israeli students only start learning
E nglish in fourth grade," she said.
"Clearly, we will have to communi-
cate in English, which will be difficult
for them at first.
To emphasize the point, Bachar
introduced the proposed areas of study
to her students by telling them, in the
style of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that
"the world is one big village where
everyone lives, where everyone has a
nose and two ears, just like you." For
the students of Yodfat, 70 percent of
which are Russian immigrants,
Bachar's message is especially relevant.
Rosenthal took back to her Conant
classroom a package filled with sou-
venirs, Israeli Bazooka bubble gum,
Hebrew comics and photos of the stu-
dents here.
Nov, both sets of students are to
begin using e-mail, music and videos
to learn about each other, and to
approach the issues of violence and
respect. If all goes according to plan,
the students will continue contact at
least into the next school year, with
both sides hoping to eventually meet.
