Visit by a Miracle Mission participant opens
way to friendship between fourth gradersin
Israel and Conant Elementary.
L
aurie Rosenthal stood in
front of the fourth-grade
class, hand raised at eye
level, and pointed to the
spot next to her thumb. "My hand is
Michigan," she told the class. "And
this is Detroit."
When Rosenthal, a speech patholo-
gist at Conant Elementary School in
Bloomfield Hills, came to Israel on
Michigan Miracle Mission III in April,
she spent a morning with the fourth-
grade class of Yodfat School in
Nazareth Illit, getting
0 to know them
--
and handing our materials that her
American fourth-graders had pre-
pared. That included information on
their families and their interests, still
pictures, a videotape and maps and
Michigan travel brochures.
The children here wanted to know
about Michigan, America and Jewish
Americans. "Does everyone speak
English?" "Do they have to study
Torah?" and - Do they have recess like
us?" they asked, in an endearing mix
of Hebrew and beginner's English.
Rosenthal's presence in the class
was part of- a broader program to link
the Detroit Jewish community and the
communities of the Central Galilee
region, including the Jezreel Valley,
Migdal HaEmek, Nazareth'and
Nazareth Illit. The program,
Partnership 2000, aims to bring the
communities closer together so that
each can learn from the other.
