31 ust because you don't have a
million dollars to spare, you
don't have to feel entirely
left out of an ambitious
plan to endow schools, trips to
Israel or helping Jewish college stu-
dents keep their identity.
For as little as $3,000, the Detroit
area's top fund-raisers say, you can get
a page in their Community
Endowment Fund Book of Life and a
handmade tzedakah box. For
$10,000, the box is crystal, $18,000
gets silver and a double chai $36,000
brings home the gold.
Fund-raisers have been finding big-
time donors to contribute to the $50
million Millennium Campaign for
Detroit's Jewish Future. The campaign
is split equally between the Jewish Life
Fund, an endowment for Jewish edu-
cation and other locally based Jewish
life experiences, and t he Jewish
Community Center, part endowment
and part bricks-and-mortar work at
the facilities in West Bloomfield and
Oak Park. To date, the drive has
brought in S11 million for the Fund
and $14 million for the JCC, largely
through gifts of S1 million and up.
Now, the United Jewish Foundation
of Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
program is aiming for gifts from "regu-
lar people" who might have thought
helping an endowment was largely out
of their reach.
"We want people to see that they
don't have to be extremely wealthy to
get recognition," said Robert Slatkin,
president of the UJF, the banking and
real estate arm of the Detroit Jewish
community.
Four of the six areas to which
money can be designated — day school
tuition assistance, informal Jewish edu-
cation, Israel trips for young people,
the Partnership 2000 people-to-people
exchange between Michigan and Israel's
Central Galilee — were named by gifts
of more than Si million as part of the
larger Jewish Life Fund. Endowments
for the congregational education fund
and the Jewish outreach on college
campus fund have not been named yet.
Donors may add to their contribu-
tion at any point. Reaching a higher
donation level earns a new and differ-
ent tzedakah box. Ei

children learn best through hands-on-experience, it's a good idea to involve their feet, too.
