havuot is here, and the
National Jewish Center for
Learning and Leadership
(CLAL) is ready with a nice,
low-key Web site intended to "revital-
ize" the holiday and "create a national
community of celebration," according
to the official CLAL announcement.
In the real world, CLAUS National
Unity Shavuot is taking place only in
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and
\ Miami. But Web visitors can follow
the program electronically, and use
the site's materials for their own com-
munity celebrations.
The visit starts with a concise his-
tory of the holiday and its importance
in Jewish life, and a description of the
CLAL program.
But the real heart of the site is
buried in the "Shavuot options" sec-
tion: a "resource card" that encourages
visitors to gather with friends and
consider appropriate texts.
Two sections of Shavuot study then
provide some of those texts, pose
questions and offer the option of join-
ing on-line discussions.
The site also links visitors to the
CLAL homepage, where you can find
out more about what this outreach-
minded organization is up to.
CLAL's Shavuot site is a little
confusing to navigate, but the mate-
rial is clear and focused without a
lot of fluff to get in your way. The
spirit of the group comes through
loud and clear.
