emple Beth El was the
recent site for the Women's
Action for New Directions
(WAND) annual Mothers'
Peace Day Award Breakfast. More
than 200 patrons attended the event,
which was organized by co-chairmen
Joan Israel and Lorraine Lerner.
Attorney General Jennifer Granholm
was the guest speaker. Arlene Victor is
past national president and Michigan
group co-founder.
The mission of
WAND is to empower
women politically and
to reduce violence.
State Rep. Debbie
Stabenow, campaign-
ing for a U.S. Senate
seat, told the crowd
that together they
could change the face
of the Senate. She also
said, "I have zero toler-
ance for guns and drugs in the schools
and on the street."
Granholm gave a passionate
speech on our changing community
and how moms make a difference.
Some of the WAND committee
members include Harriet Alpern,
Isabel. Doyle, Marcia Gershenson,
Joyce Kaplan, Fern Katz, Vicki
Lange, Sissi Lapides, Clare Mead
Rosen, Kathleen Mooney, Jean
Prokopow, Lorene Rever, Dorie

ASTROPHYSICS AND TORAH
Questions of astrophysics and
Torah co-mingled with the aromas of
Dover sole and portabello mushrooms
last week at La Difference restaurant
when Dr. Sonya Friedman hosted a
reception in honor of Dr. Gerald
Schroeder. Dr. Shroeder, author of
Genesis and the Big Bang and The
Science of God was in town lecturing
for Aish HaTorah.
"Prime Minister Rabin, of blessed
memory, gave Aish land for its world
center opposite the holy wall in
Jerusalem because he recognized the
work that Aish does in opening doors
of communication and understanding
between Jews," said Schroeder, who is
a senior staff member at Aish
HaTorah in Jerusalem.
Some of the people at the reception
included Jack and Charlene Wolf,
Michael and Shelley Eizelman, Dr.
Rick and Linda Cohen, Dr. John
Marx, Dr. and Mrs. Larry Lipnick, Dr.
and Mrs. Barry Bell, James Hogan and
Anna Sobichart, Rabbi Mon and Leah
Tolwin and Vicki Hochstadt.:
