length-wise "bagels" without holes that
people love so much ... His bagel wheels
are in a highly-regarded taste class ...
and folks now can have their egg bagels
without eggs ... Richard's substitute
takes nothing away from the worthy
taste ... This is good news for many.
With new equipment, like a bagel
oven, mixer, bialy-maker, etc. ... this is
not a takeover from the defunct
Blazing Bagels that couldn't make it
It's a spanking clean operation ... No. 7
by New Detroit Bagel Factory.
WHEN HE OPENED King Lim's,
his first Chinese restaurant, on Nine
Mile and Scotia in Oak Park, 35 years
ago, Harold Horn was one of the first
to make chicken dumplings that were
pan-fried with a very thin batter ...
Many Chinese spots still deep-fry
theirs ... This specialty and his
Harold's Chicken (spicy, unless
requested otherwise) followed him to
Greenfield and Lincoln (Lincoln
Center) and now on to Ming Dynasty,
Drake and Walnut Lake roads.
Now Harold's entourage is saying
hello in his smaller, 60-seater New King
Lim's restaurant, on 12 Mile Road, east
of Orchard Lake Road, in Tiffany Plaza.
REUNION DEPT ... No. 50 by
the Central High class of 1949, is
Saturday, September 4, at Hyatt
Regency Hotel in Dearborn ... Call
Adell Abromovich Ozrovitz, (248) 661-
0269, or Sally Lebowitz Levine, (248)
545-7496.
WHENEVER ANY of the 12th
Street Reunion Club members who
don't live in Michigan anymore come to
the Detroit area, they get taken out for
dinner by some in the group ... The lat-
est was Allen Levitt, coming in from
Des Moines, Iowa, where he has lived
the past 38 years ... Six 12th Street gents
took him to Big Daddy's recently ...
Nate Light, Kenny Sanders, Bernie
Moss, Ronnie Barris, Paul Savine and
Herb Silver.
WHEN ORDERING in an ethnic
restaurant, don't use the language of the
place unless you know what you're talk-
ing about ... Heaven only knows what
you might wind up with ... The story is
told of James McNeil Whistler, the cele-
brated artist, who rather prided himself
on his knowledge of French ... In a fash-
ionable Paris restaurant one evening, he
insisted upon ordering the dinner and
got very angry when a friend tried to
help the waiter understand everything
that was being said ... "I am quite capa-
ble of speaking French without your
assistance," Whistler grumbled ... "That
may well be," said his friend, "but I just
heard you distinctly place an order for a
flight of steps." L7
