the Jedi. He certainly means well in his

actions, and his clumsiness generally
results in something positive happening.
Another interesting character, although
a bit part, is the play-by-play announcer
at the pod race, where the young
Anakin Skywalker (lake Lloyd) makes a
bid for his freedom. The two-headed
"thing" (for lack of a better description)
speaks some foreign language from one
head, with the other translating in a
Howard Cosell-esque tone.

JPC: We have recognized the subtle
religious tones in the original Star Wars
trilogy, particularly the spiritual, all-
present Force. But religion is even more
evident in this prequel, with Qui-Gon
fingered by Anakin as a potential
Moses who will free the slaves of
Tatooine. Anakin himself, though, is
the "Chosen One," the "savior," the
one immaculately conceived by his
mother. He will bring balance to the
Force (though if you saw Jedi, you
know differently). Still, the point is the
power of the individual to change his
own fate and the fates of others.
Speaking of religious overtones, the
attractive and talented Jewish actress
Natalie Portman was very good in two
roles (you'll have to see the movie). I
look forward to her character Queen
Amidala's development in the next two
episodes. Like fellow Jewish actress
Carrie Fisher, who played her daughter
Princess Leia, Natalie's portrayal of
Queen Amidala is of a headstrong, inde-
pendent and feisty female. She holds her
own in a male-dominated galaxy.
A caveat: Plot sticklers, don't fall
into the trap of poring over any flaws
in detail you may come across — you'll
miss the vast beauty that is Lucas'
vision. Enjoy the movie for what it's
worth — the continuation (or begin-
ning, depending on how you look at it)
of one of the greatest myths ever told.

LG: Try not to look at it through the
eyes of a critic. Many panned its lack
of character development (with the
exception of Roger Ebert, who realizes
we'll learn more about these new char-
acters in Episodes II and III), because
the critic's job is to slam everything.
Sit, watch and enjoy. The effects and
the action alone are worth the price of
admission.
