Akiva student Danielle Weiss, 17,
writes a letter to Palestinian students.

away in the middle of the night, that's
what gives you the impression that
someone is repressing you.
Jewish organizations are generally
supportive of MATCKH. The Agency
for Jewish Education of Metropolitan
Detroit is publicizing Kids for Peace
amona day schools and Hebrew
schools. "W
' e do that for any program
that we think is important. Then it's
up to the schools to decide whether
it's appropriate for them," said AJE
Director Judah Isaacs.
Last week at Akiva Hebrew Day
School in Lathrup Vilkage, the first
stop for Kids for Peace, students were
compliant but skeptical.
"Do you really think they're going
to read our letters?" asked ninth-grader
Michal Freier, who moved to Detroit
from Israel in 1996. "It's like some
Nazi writing to me and asking me to
like them. It's exactly the same thing."
In response, Resnick said, "Do we
want to live and make peace with peo-
ple who are raising their children to
hate us? Maybe you will reach the
children. You could be instrumental in
either changing them or exposing that
it's a farce. You could be like Avraham,
showing there are no idols."
"Wouldn't you have wanted to be
there when the Nazis trained their
youth to hate, and be able to do
something to stop it?" continued
Resnick. "If it's not going to change,
maybe we have to expose it."
As they worked on their letters,
Akiva students said they thought the
project well-intentioned but did not
expect it to yield results.
"I just wrote, Please don't hate. Please
don't teach your children to hate,'"' said
10th-grader Tamar Pieczenik. "I'm not
sure if it will make a difference. It could,
but it's not probable."
"It's a good idea, but kind of far-
fetched," said 11th-grader Kayla
Jacobson. "But if more than just our
school participates, maybe something
could come of it." II
