and Bubbie was baby-sitting my chil-
dren. After coming home a few hours
later, Bubbie had tucked the children in
bed, folded all my family's laundry,
cleaned the refrigerator and polished the
silverware. This, she said, was all done in
her 'spare time,' Nadiv said.
Even though Kutnick wears a pace-
maker, fellow Hechtman resident Eve
C. Lieberman describes her friend as
one who can't slow down: "People rely
on her. If she promises someone
something, then it's done — regard-
less of how she feels.
Kutnick's family describes her as
always leading in her own quiet way, not
looking to lead or gain praise. Her four-
generation family explains that Kutnick
lives her life by putting others first and
having a loving and giving heart. That
lesson is shared generation to generation
within the family.
"With all her good deeds and won-
derful reputation, the community truly
has a jewel in her. Most importantly, her
family has been blessed to call her our
mom and Bubble," wrote Kutnick's
family.

Anne Mondrow
A strong commitment to Israel is some-
thing Anne Mondrow has had all her
life. Her volunteer efforts and fund-rais-
ing have helped to strength-
en the coun-
try and peo-
ple she holds
dear to her
heart.
"I'm a
Zionist and
my family was
very commit-
ted to Israel. I
continued that
feeling. I always
felt that if we
had no Israel, we would have no Jews.
That's our land and our background,"
Mondrow said.
Mondrow has visited Israel seven
times and has family living there. Her
efforts to strengthen the land can be
seen through her lifetime of work at
Na'amat, NA/here the 91-year-old woman
serves as treasurer. Na'amat raises money
that supports day care centers and voca-
tional schools in Israel.
Mondrow volunteers at Jewish
Association of Residential Care. She
helped coordinate educational seminars
that brought staff from the Michigan
Jewish AIDS Coalition (MJAC) to
Na'amat discussion groups.
"She felt it was important that all
ages be aware of AIDS. She wanted the
issues known so that women could talk
with their grandchildren and great-
grandchildren about the issue. She's
quite a forward-thinking and modern
woman," said Linda Lee, a MJAC board
member and Mondrow's great-niece.
"Anne doesn't see herself as anything
special. She does what she does because
she loves doing it," Lee said.
Mondrow agreed: "It's part of our life
as Jews to give back to the community
If we don't help the community, how
can it be strong?"
Lee views Mondrow as a role model
because she lives an ethical life and leads
by example. She has cared for her older
sisters and always lends a hand to people
in need. Lee said that even when
Mondrow lost her husband and a
daughter early in life, she always looked
forward to a new day.

Alex Saltsman
Alex Saltsman has helped many organi-
zations further Jewish education.
However, his idea to have 1-696 pass

might be his
biggest
achievement.
"His idea
of the 696
underpass
saved the
Jewish com-
munity in
Oak Park and Southfield. He con-
vinced people not to move to West
BloOmfield and forsake the old Jewish
neighborhoods," wrote friend Emanuel
Mittelman.
Saltsman helped build the Young
Israel of Oak-Woods congregation and
continues his three decades of activity
with Young Israel of Oak Park. He has
been involved in Machon LTorah since
its inception nearly 20 years ago and
spends much of his time creating a
Judaic Library and Resource Center for
the organization. Also, for over four
decades, Saltsman has held various posi-
tions with Yeshiva Beth Yehudah.
"Alex has an unending focus and con-
centration in building a community that
would become educated, impassioned
and saturated with Jewish values. He has
transformed hundreds, if not thousands,
of Jewish institutions in their growth
between 1950 and today," wrote Young
Israel of Oak Park Rabbi Steven Wed.
Rabbi Weil said Saltsman inspired
