Hauntingly beauriftil, the church
•
over the centuries has attracted
Armenian, Roman Catholic, Egyptian
and Greek Orthodox followers. Today,
it stands in tribute to the diversity of
the four quarters of the Old City that
Jewish, Arab, Christian
surround it
and N/luslim.
As my wife Beth and I explored the
nooks and crannies of the Old City's
quaint shops during a free afternoon, we
encounte ed an especially caring Arab
merchant named Jamal Bader. He runs a
nicely appointed, custom jewelry shop
in the Christian Quarter, No. 22.
"We're all human," the Jerusalem
native told us, extending a hand in
friendship as we rested for a moment
on the couch on his shop's tile floor.
"Why cant we live in peace?"
His calm demeanor belied the fero-
cious wisdom in the recipe for peace
he then served up.
As he put it: "It seems so simple. Let's
just sit together, with open minds and
open hearts, to discuss the beauty of
each of our religions — rather than
debate which religion is best." El
