Elyse Essick of Munder Capital
Joyce Weingarten, speaker Dr. Sonya
Friedman and Gerrie Sottish at Adat Shalom Management with her mother,
Sisterhood's Spring Donor Day.
Helen . Goldin.
Elkus were honored at the event.
Their first visit to Alyn Hospital was
during Detroit's Miracle Mission of
1993.
"When I first entered the hospital
six years ago with Gina and (Jewish
News publisher) Arthur Horwitz, I
didn't know what it was or what it
did," recalled Elkus. Overcome by the
courage of the children they saw, and
the hospital's plight, upon returning
to Detroit, the Elkuses become
involved; Phil joined the Detroit
Friends of Alyn Hospital Board.
Elkus says the children and the
hospital simply inspired them.
"Whatever I can do to help these kids,
that's what life is all about," he said.
Sons Ron and Steve Elkus corn-
mented on how their parents have
made a difference. "The world needs
more caring and compassionate people
like you," noted Steve. Ron added
that his father approaches his charity
work like a true salesman.
Others who received honors at the
event were Florine Mark Ross and
Miriam Goldberg. Ross, who was
unable to attend, was presented with
an award honoring her late sister,
Sondra Berlin. Goldberg was honored
as a past president.
Master magician Michael Jacobson
performed a magic show after the din-
ner and the presentation. But the true
magic of the evening was the success
of this small group, comprised of local
volunteers. —
(On a personal note, in this col-
umn I covered the first formal and
very small fund-raising event for
Allyn Hospital in 1990. It was held
at the home of Arlene and Steven
Victor with guest speaker Rabbi
Chuck Diamond, who was then at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.)
ADAT SHALOM DONOR DAY
The Sisterhood of Adat Shalom
Synagogue held its annual Spring
Donor day, attracting more than 375
patrons. The event featured Dr. Sonya
Friedman and honored Judy Leder.
Adat Shalom's Rabbi Efry Spectre
gave a glowing overview of Leder's
contributions to the synagogue. "Judy
has brought sunlight into our lives,"
said Rabbi Spectre. He called Leder a
role model in sisterhood and a true
leader.
Friedman gave an impassioned
speech on inspiring change. She
asked the audience to ask them-
selves, "Who am I? How do I define
myself inside? and Where am I
going?"
Some of the donor day organizers
included Joyce Weingarten, Gerrie
Sollish, Toby Dobkin, Hannah
Monique Ulrych, Linda Warner,
Sharon. Lubetsky, Sherri Kass,
Sonja Kass, Janis Holcman, Sandi
Miller, Jane Anchill, Ann Rudy,
Judy Rudy, Danie Allan and
Helayne Kaplan.
MOTHER'S DAY TEA
Elyse Essick, senior partner at
Munder Capital Management in
Birmingham, hosted a Mother's Day
Tea last week. After an elegant tea
with a professional table set by
Francine Zick, mothers and daughters
toured the Birmingham center viewing
how an investment advisory firm
works.
"This is a great opportunity to go
into an investment firm and see
what it's like," said Essick. She
brought along her mom, Helen
Goldin for the event. Some of the
other Mother's Day Tea attendees
included Wendy Roth, Faye Saffer,
Lois Shaevsky, Judy Hoefler, Janice
Morganroth and Andrea
Morganroth.
