AUCTION AT it's the fun part of the night anyway." Poundstone, who started her career in Massachusetts comedy clubs and moved on to larger concert venues, gained national attention through the late-night talk shows. She won a CableACE Award in 1992 for her first hour-long, standup special for HBO, Cats, Cops and stig5r, which led to a second successful HBO comedy hour in 1996, Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard. She currently is part of the ABC animated morning program Squigglevision, taking on the role of Judge Stone. She stars in the new ani- mated UPN series, Horne Movies, as Paula Stone, a divorced, single mom with two children. "With the exception of the divorce part, the new series is somewhat auto- biographical," says Poundstone, who adopted two of the six foster children she has brought into her home. "I try to be an advocate for foster parenting as much as I can. That's the reason I went public with it. There are many more children in the system than there are families to care for them." Ironically, Poundstone doesn't allow her youngsters to watch the medium that brought her so much success. "Even if you're watching something that is fairly benign and harmless, images cross the screen that are just hor- rendous," she explains. "There could be a commercial for the most violent [pro- grams] they have coming up later that night. I don't want my kids to see that if I can possibly avoid it." Poundstone, who is scheduling fewer shows far from home to spend more time with her children, is glad that her upcoming visit to Michigan will help people confronting serious illness. "I've dealt with life-threatening dis- eases through people close to me, and [Gilda's Clubs] certainly make sense," she says. 7 THE GALLERY Friday, May 14th at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15th at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, May 16th at Noon Exhibition Hours: FREE VALET PARKING ALL SALE DATES Free Parking Wednesday Evening Exhibition 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 9 : 30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 9:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 7th Saturday, May 8th Monday.
