Abraham Skernick at Indiana
University, where he received his gradu-
ate degree. He has been an instructor of
viola at Wayne State University and the
Conservatory of Minas Gerais in Brazil.
This year, Mellow, along with DSO
violinists Hai Xin Wu and Kimberly .
Kaloyanides and cellist Debra Fayroian,
has played as a member of the Sonnet
Quartet, musicians-in-residence at
Oakland University's Department of
Music, Theatre and Dance, where the
ensemble interacts with faculty and stu-
dents in a variety of ways. "It's great to
be able to work with these students in
the areas of both performance and
composition," says Mellow. "Their
energy keeps us on our toes, keeps us
fresh." Mellow, a member of the
Birmingham Temple, is married to
soprano Edith Diggory Mellow. The
Sonnet Quartet will perform 3 p.m.
Sunday, May 9, at Varner Recital Hall
on the campus of Oakland University
in a program featuring works by
Dvorak, Shostakovich and Beethoven.

The Lee Konitz Trio, featuring leg-
endary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz,
one of the most original voices in
modern jazz, takes the stage 7 and 9
p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Ann Arbor's

clinic/master class open to the public
