City, one of our favorite locations
in Israel.
"This trip was so special. We thor-
oughly toured Jerusalem. The best
part was Shabbat dinner."
The photo was taken by Janice's
husband, Don Scharg. When not
touring Israel, Janice is a nursery-
school teacher at Adat Shalom Syn-
agogue, Ari is a junior at West
Bloomfield High School, and Sally
is in eighth grade at Hillel Day
School.

Rachel is a writer for Lamishpacha,
a Hebrew monthly, and Hadoar.
She's also a certified ulpan (inten-
sive Hebrew language) teacher.
"My first ulpan was in 1960 in
Ramla, twin city of Detroit, as a
matter of fact. If was in Ulpan Boro-
chov in Givatayim that I met my
husband-to-be Shelly, who came
there fresh from medical school."
Rachel also is a soprano-soloist with
Melodic Musicale Ensemble.

#5) Alon and ima Rachel Kapen

#6) Debbie Basch with daughter,
Chandler

"Alon is the second of my four sons,
shown here on a recent short visit to
Michigan from his home in New
York City," writes ima (mother)
Rachel of West Bloomfield. "Alon,
and his elder brother Gilead, from
greater Washington, D.C., came to
see younger brother Udi [a South-
field pediatrician], who played the
role of the Tinman in a local pro-
duction of Wizard of Oz.
"Alon is a graduate in economics
from Brandeis University. Like
Gilead, he has a law degree
from Cornell. He is a corporate
lawyer in a Manhattan law firm
and lives on the Upper East
Side."

This photo shows Chandler going
sledding for the first time, says her
mom, Debbie Basch of West
Bloomfield. "It was our first winter
storm, and we couldn't wait to go
play in the snow together! I'm sure
it was the most snow she has ever
seen, since she's only 20 months
old [in this picture]. I know our
New Year's storm got some people
upset, but we enjoyed it, as did my
husband and son.
"My hobbies are snow skiing in the
winter and boating in the summer. I
feel very fortunate to be on a lake
because I grew up in New York
and we barely had any trees or
back yards.

"I also have a son, Chase, who
is 6. Chandler just turned 2. I call
Chandler my miracle baby. When
I was pregnant with her, I was in
a severe car accident. Chase
was in the back seat. I was
injured, but miraculously, Chase
was fine. I had to have so many
x-rays that the doctors were wor-
ried about my unborn baby. But
here she is! I feel so fortunate to
have both my children."
Debbie says that her family loves
celebrating Chanukah, in part
because they have a tradition of
singing a favorite song, "which I'm
sure no one else has ever heard of,
but it belonged to my mother and
her family. I sang it with her as a
child every year. Now I continue to
sing it with my children, and it will
become their tradition.
"My mother passed away a few
years ago, and unfortunately never
met my children. But when we sing
this song at Chanukah, I can almost
feel her presence.
"Mother's Day can be an extremely
difficult time for those of us who
have lost our mothers. We can only
carry on their traditions and hope
that they would have been proud of
us."
