the Western Wall. Most of the
young fighters had never seen it. All
they knew of the Wall was from sto-
ries told time and again by their
parents and teachers.
On a radio broadcast heard
around the world, Rabbi Shloimeh
Goren, Israel army chaplain (later,
chief rabbi of Israel), stood at the
Kotel and sounded the shofar, a
clarion call of Jewish sovereignty
and a reminder of the Wall's sacred
status to the Jewish people.
Israelis from all over the country
flocked to Jerusalem, eager to see
the eastern portion that had
remained hidden for 19 years.
Shocked by the devastation in the
old Jewish neighborhoods, Israelis
undertook the largest restoration
project in the history of the state.
Relying on old photographs and
drawings, they rebuilt the ruined
synagogues, yeshivot and houses.
Where repair was not possible,
new buildings and plazas were
built. The Jewish Quarter of the Old
City became one of Jerusalem's
most desirable neighborhoods.
The Israelis also discovered that
under Jordanian rule, the Old City's
division into four unequal "quarters"
was altered to give the Muslims the
lion's share of the city. Many old
Jewish houses were now in the
Muslim or Christian quarters. Over
the years, some of these have been
re-acquired by Jewish families and
institutions.
The Israeli Chief Rabbinate
devised a special religious service
for Yom•Yerushalayim. At mincha
(the afternoon service) of 27 lyar,
the semi-mournful tachanun daily
prayer is not recited. The morning
service of Yom Yerushalayim begins
with the pisukay d'zimra, prelimi-
nary prayers of Shabbat and yom
tov, and Hallel is recited.
It is proper to have a festive meal
on Yom Yerushalayim, with every-
one singing songs mentioning
Jerusalem from the repertory of tradi-
tional Jewish music. 7
