ell Carter brought the
Temple Israel audience to
their feet in applause, and
she touched their hearts
with laughter. But above all, the
comedian, singer and actress insisted
Sunday that Judaism is a privilege,
not a burden.
"What message would I want to
leave with everyone?" Carter repeated
the query from an audience member

on her way out of the temple. "Be
proud to be Jewish. If not change
your name.
Carter's pert attitude toward
Judaism comes after decades of per-
sonal and spiritual search to find
inner peace through religion.
Born a Catholic, she began to ques-
tion the platitudes of her faith at an
early age. "At 7, I cried because a nun
hit me. I was confused over it all.
Why would someone hit me in the
name of God? How could God have
been up there, but down here too?"
