AJEFENTION

Jews who have already immigrated to
--) Israel, said Joszi Croitoru, a Jewish
Agency representative.
He said 80 young Serbian Jews
are taking a complimentary 12-day
"pilot trip" to Israel and another 80
have signed up.
Beginning with the war in Croatia in
1991 and the war in Bosnia in 1992,
many younger Jews in each of these
communities have made their way to
the U.S., Canada, Israel and elsewhere.
Sarajevo's Jewish youth will never return.
Now it appears as though Belgrade's
Jewish community is beginning to
empty out as well. Li

1Cosovar Aid
In Detroit

Detroit will be one of 10 United States
cities to welcome a sizeable influx of
Kosovar Albanian refugees in the corn-
ing months. The Jewish community
— cooperating with other religious
and ethnic groups — will play an
active role in resettlement efforts.
Brought here by the U.S. Office of
Refugee Resettlement, the refugees
are expected to remain here for six
months and then return to Kosovo,
assuming the conflict in their home-
land is resolved. Priority placement
will be given to individuals with rela-
tives already living in the United
States, and Detroit is one of four
U.S. cities with large ethnic Albanian
communities — estimated at 40,000.
The number of refugees expect-
ed in Detroit is still unknown and
efforts to help them are just begin-
ning. Currently the Jewish Family
Service is creating a directory of
needs — including housing, food,
clothing, medical attention — and
will work closely with the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Jewish Community
Council, Jewish Vocational Service
and Jewish congregations to pro-
vide necessary services.

To volunteer to help, call
the Jewish Family Service
at (248) 559-4411 and leave
your name and a phone num-
ber. Checks for overseas relief
may be made out to "Kosovo
Refugee Fund" and sent in care
of the Jewish Federation, P.O.
Box 2030, Bloomfield Hills,
MI 48303-2030.
