ONCE A YEAR WE

Done in our bus group died suddenly.
We were also touched when other
members of our bus renewed their
wedding vows at Masada after 27
years of marriage.
But most of all, I was able for the
first time to hug my aunt who
immigrated to Israel after surviving
the Holocaust. My daughter and I
had lunch with my 90-year-old aunt
and were moved by the fact that
there were four generations sitting
around the kitchen table, eating
Russian food from recipes remem-
bered and now repeated. Like so
many others in our group, we re-
established connections with family
in Israel.
To remove one experience from
the whole is impossible. My experi-
ence is one that will always be felt
with a sense of connection and pride
in my family, our Jewish people and
what they have accomplished.
I became aware of my feelings
and values as never before with a
sense of renewed pride. P

Olmert said.
In the meantime, "for us to be in
Jerusalem is the essence of everything
we are fighting for and everything we
are dreaming of."
If the Arabs see Israel giving in on
Jerusalem, the former Knesset mem-
ber said, they'll think it will give in
on everything. "If Israel doesn't stand
firm on this issue, there's little chance
of a stable peace."
"The city must not be divided," he
said. "It's the capital of one nation —
as it was, as it is, as it's destined to be,
as most nations believe it to be."
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Harlene
Appelman characterized Olmert as
charismatic and articulate. But she
said his speech was basically "a great
pep talk devoid of a lot of issues.
As for his call to unify the govern-
ment, she said, "I think when you
become mayor of Jerusalem, it becomes
a love affair. You want to do the very
best for the bride you have taken.
What could be better for Jerusalem
than a unity government?" I I
