fly balls in the wind — and both balls
dropped in for singles. Kapler made
up for it with a running, run-saving
catch on a Darin Erstad line drive to
left-center with a runner on second in
a tie game in the sixth inning.
Kapler said he was a bit unsure of
how his teammates would receive him
when he met them in Tampa Bay for
his first road trip, but Higginson said
Kapler hasn't done anything to hurt
himself yet.
"The guys like him," Higginson
said. "He works hard and doesn't say
much."
Said Kapler, "I didn't get much
response, but I take none to be good.
If they were unhappy, I figure they'd
tell me.
Asked the differences between
Triple-A Toledo and Major League
Detroit, it's "more of a feeling of con-
stant excitement," said Kapler. Its
tough to stay loose when every at-bat
is important.
"In the minors, you're not neces-
sarily asked to win, but to develop."
After the trip to Tampa Bay,
Kapler said his swing had been incon-
sistant, but he has been working with
Trammell on the finer points.
"Mostly I get tips on how to handle
certain situations and what he did to
adjust," Kapler said. "I'd like to have
that insight and knowledge. "
In the Tigers' half of Tuesday's
sixth inning, he drilled a one-out
triple off the top of the fence in left-
centerfield. Unfortuantely for the
Tigers, he was left stranded at third,
but they won anyway, 3-1. Kapler
stood on-deck when the game win-
ning home run was hit in the eighth
inning.
Kapler also reached base in the
fourth inning when third baseman
Troy Glaus cleanly fielded Kapler's
groundball, but couldn't get it out of
his glove to throw him out. Kapler
was caught stealing one pitch later.
He also grounded out twice. II
