Michigan has cho-

solutions that make a positive
impact on the community.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme of Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield is a former
president of the Family Service
Society of Metropolitan Detroit and
of the Central Conference of
American Rabbis.
Adam Cardinal Maida, archbish-
op of Detroit, is an outspoken leader
on the issue of respecting life. He is
one of the cofounders of the
Cornerstone Schools in Detroit.
Imam Abdullah Bey El-Amin,
founder and chairman of the
Muslim. Center of Detroit, series on
Hospice of Michigan's Muslim
Community Advisory Board.
Dr. Samuel H. Bullock Jr., pastor
of Bethany Baptist Church in
Detroit, oversees the Bethany Baptist
Educational Center.

Applications are being accepted from
college students interested in apply-
ing for interest-free loans through
the Jewish Educational Loan Service
(JELS) for the 1999/2000 year.
Administered through Jewish
Vocational Service (JVS), Hebrew
Free Loan Association and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, the program is available to
metro Detroit area Jewish residents.
To be considered, applicants must be
full-time students pursuing an
undergraduate, graduate or profes-
sional education; be able to docu-
ment financial need; attend a
Michigan educational institution
unless a comparable education is not
available in Michigan; and demon-
strate academic progress toward a
career objective.
JELS is funded through a partner-
ship of more than 70 private funds
and philanthropic service organiza-
tions. In addition to loans, JVS also
provides counseling to parents and
students interested in other financial
aid options available through state,
federal and private sources.
JELS applications will be accepted
through Nov. 12. For information,

Yizkor Service
For Survivors

The United Jewish Social Club First
and Second Generation Survivors
will conduct its annual Yizkor ser-
vice 1 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center.
Rabbi Leo Goldman of
Congregation Shaarey Shomayim, a
Holocaust survivor, will deliver the
keynote address. Drs. Fran Klein-
Parker and Deborah Cala-Reinitz,
both second generation survivors,
also will address the gathering.
Cantor Schaja Kleinberg will chant
the prayers.

The Shul
Plans Events

The Shul, a new spiritual center in
West Bloomfield, will welcome the
Shabbat at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 7,
at 6211 Quaker Hill Drive, West
Bloomfield. A candlelighting cere-
mony will be followed at 6:45 p.m.
by Kabbalat Shabbat and at 7:30
p.m. by Shabbat dinner.
Rabbi Y.M. Kagan will speak on
souls and angels. A donation of $10
per adult, $18 per couple and $25
per family is requested.
Rabbi Kagan will lead a discus-
sion and provide Chasidic stories 7
p.m. Saturday, May 8, at seuda
shlishit followed by havdala services.
There will be no charge for this
event.
For families with children, there
will be a special program led by
counselors at all sessions. For reser-
