volume of fiction and nonfiction
pieces inspired by his life.
A roster of distinguished friends and
colleagues, including Aharon Appelfeld,
Ariel Dorfman, Hillel Levine, John K.
Roth, Reinhold Boschki, Pnina Lahav,
Cynthia Ozick and more, in the fields
of philosophy, theology, psychology,
sociology, law, and literary endeavors
participated in the project.
In the introductory essay, "Elie
Wiesel: A Biblical Life," lawyer Alan
Dershowitz notes that in spite of
Wiesel's experiences in Europe, "he
showed the way from brutal victimiza-
tion to gentle kindness. His very life
became a shining example of an alter-
native to the cycle of violence and
retaliation which has characterized his-
tory for millennia."
Wiesel is the recipient of 90 hon-
orary degrees from colleges around the
country.

Elie Wiesel will be the guest
speaker at the Michigan State
University spring convocation.
The graduation ceremony begins
at 1 p.m. Friday, May 7, in
Breslin Center, Harrison at
Kalamazoo streets, in East
Lansing. The ceremony is open
to the public; there is no admis-
sion charge. For more informa-

The Write Stu

Explaining how to e a working
scriptwriter without being a household
name is the objective of former
Detroiter Bonnie Garvin's two-day
seminar, From Detroit to
Hollywood...and Across the Pond."
Garvin, in the process of having her
second script produced for television,
will be at the Birmingham
Community House Saturday and
Sunday, May 15 and 16.
"This is the first time I'm doing
this seminar," says Garvin, a Wayne
State University graduate who became
an anti-war activist and worked in
radio and public relations before mov-
ing to New York and then Los
Angeles. "A friend who teaches cre-
ative writing suggested that I do it."
Garvin plans on discussing agents,
markets, options, rights and contacts
— the business end of turning a dra-
matic idea into a film.

script," says Garvin, whose living is
earned by doing rewrites and selling th
rights to her projects. This workshop
will give writers the knowledge, skills,
business acumen and confidence need /
ed to be successful in Hollywood
Garvin's writing career got off the
ground after she became a finalist in
the Eugene O'Neill Playwrights
Conference.
"It was a good calling card, and th
harder I saw it was to sell a screenplay
the more I wanted to do it," says
Garvin, who was confirmed at T
em pl)
Israel.
The first script Garvin had pro-
duced, When the Vows Break, was
about a woman exploited by a
Michigan judge, and it appeared on
Lifetime cable in 1995. Her second
film that is being produced, The Law
and Bernard Stroble for Showtirne, als
is based on the legal system in
Michigan.
"Writers can have great careers and
never have a movie made," insists
Garvin, who now is intent on market
ing work in Europe. "I feel I came a
long way and others can, too."
