Musical Notes
Film soundtracks are as common as
dirt; TV show soundtracks are on the
rise; and now we've got soundtracks
for sporting events?
Well, sort.of. Vietnam: Long Time
Coming (various artists; Columbia)
isn't so much a soundtrack to the
World T.E.A.M. Sports' 1998 Vietnam
Veteran bicycle tour from Hanoi to
Ho Chi Minh City. It is, however, a
soundtrack to the documentary that
sprang from this event. And it's a pret-
ty good little soundtrack at that.
Ben Sidran's six original compositions
steer clear of the weepy, sweeping
orchestrations we've come to expect
from manipulators like Steven Spielberg.
Instead, Sidran's "Bamboo" captures the
frenetic pace of urban Vietnam; his "A
Different Drummer" embraces the vital-
ity of survival rather than the somber
regret of wartime; and "43 Miles" brings
a funky, bluely spirit to South Asia.
Sidran's soundtrack is free to be wild
and jovial because three expert singer-
songwriters contribute songs that cap-
ture all of the earnest emotionality of
Vietnam. Bruce Springsteen's 1984
"Shut Out the Light," Shawn Colvin's
1989 "Ricochet in Time" and Emmylou
Harris' 1993 "I Hear a Call" are gut-
wrenching ballads that keep this sound-
track in check, and make this album a
worthy addition to any collection.

Clarification
Last week's story on direc-
tor/writer/producer Lawrence
Kasdan contained an error of
fact. While Kasdan did direct the
film French Kiss starring Meg
Ryan and Kevin Kline, he did
not write the screenplay. It was
written by Adam Brooks.
