Earning Recognition
The Detroit Friends of Yeshivot
Kerem B'Yavneh and Sha'alvim will
host a brunch reception 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, April 25, at Young Israel of
Southfield, 27705 Lahser.
The yeshivot are prominent Israeli
post-high schools for young men, and
part of the Hesder Yeshiva group of
schools. The movement was started 45
years ago by the late Harav Chaim
Yaakov Goldvicht, founder of Kerem
B'Yavneh.
The Hesder Yeshiva movement
came about in response to the need for
young men entering the Israel Defense
Forces to be able to continue their
Torah studies. Both Kerem B'Yavneh
and Sha'alvim offer special programs
for North American students.
The reception will honor several
local residents.
Jack and Shifra Zwick will receive
the Community Leadership Award.
He's a founding owner of Zwick &
Solomon PLLC Certified Public
Accountants and an adjunct at
Oakland County Community College.
His activities include chairing the
Southfield Zoning Board of Appeals
and serving on the Jewish Federation
Apartments Board of Trustees and the
business practices committee of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. He's a past president of Young
Israel of Southfield, the Jewish
National Fund of Metropolitan
Detroit and the American Israel
Chamber of Commerce-Detroit
Chapter. He has served Akiva Hebrew
Day School.
Shifra Zwick is an owner and presi-
dent of Doneson World Class Travel of
Michigan in Southfield. She has
chaired the Akiva board and served as
president of the Akiva PTA and the
Young Israel of Southfield Sisterhood.
At the reception, Dr. Bert and
Rita Schreiber will receive the
Esteemed Parents Award. A Wayne
State University mathematics profes-
\--,sor, Bert Schreiber has served on the
board of directors of Akiva, Young
Israel of Oak Park and Young Israel
of Southfield. He has served the
Jewish Federation and the Jewish
Community Ccp.ncil of
Metropolitan Detroit. Rita Schreiber
is editor/writer for the Society of
Manufacturing Engineers, managing
editor of Manufacturing
Engineering magazine and commu-
nications director for Smithy
Corporation. She has been a volun-
teer with Young Israel of Oak Park,
Akiva, Amit Women, Jewish Family
Services and the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
Dr. David and Leah Ungar will
receive the Distinguished Alumnus
Award at the event. A podiatrist, he's a
Sha'alvim alumnus. He is financial
chairman on the Young Israel of Oak
Park Executive Board. Both Ungars
have served Yeshiva Beth Yehudah,
Young Israel of Oak Woods and Young
Israel of Greenfield. Leah Ungar, a
licensed dental hygienist, is president
of Young Israel of Oak Park
Sisterhood.
Guest speaker at the reception will
be Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, who is
one of the leaders in the movement of
Jewish return in America today. As
founder and director of the National
Jewish Outreach Program, Rabbi
Buchwald pioneered and developed
many national programs. He will
speak on "50-Year Retrospective: The
Role of American Jewry and Destiny
of Israel."
Reception co-chairs are Dr. Jeffrey
Goldenberg and Gary Torgow.
Coordinating the event are Rabbi
Marc S. Volk, executive director of
American Friends of Yeshiva Kerem
B'Yavneh, and Menachem Bar
Shalom, development director of
Yeshiva Sha'alvim.
