The visit left a strong mark. "They
looked just like us," Barron said again
and again. "They didn't look like
refugees. These are people who until
two weeks ago had good jobs, homes
and lives. Now their property, identity
and very dignity have been destroyed."
One camp she visited for a few
hours presented a horrible scene with
garbage piled three feet high, open-air
latrines, aimless children lacking even
the simplest of toys and bitter cold.
"There is an eerie feeling of stillness
to the camp, a depression. People are
almost in a comatose state," she said.

Barron took great pride in support
lent by the Jewish state. The
Macedonian-bound ISRAIR charter
plane that carried the Americans and
some 40 Israeli journalists, politicians
and the newly crowned Miss Israel, also
hauled eight tons of supplies for the
refugees at the Bradza refugee camp.
In all, Israel has donated 100 tons
of supplies to the Kosovars, and the
Israeli public has given some $1 mil-
lion in aid.
